Trotting along.....like a turkey?

It's the week before Thanksgiving break and everyone is so excited! I'm pretty sure I have heard the word "home" at least a thousand times in the past few days. Because I live in San Diego, I am automatically appointed as airport taxi. I have no problem with this because I think it's fun making an emotional scene at the airport. If I ever drop somebody off or pick them up, I be sure to launch a furry of hugs their way. I am also the designated hotel for refugees who aren't able to go home. It should be a fun Thanksgiving at the Woesle household this year. To literally get the taste of Thanksgiving, the SLP sponsored a Thanksgiving dinner on Tuesday. I figured it was going to be Harry Potteresque with a bunch of cool decorations in a dimmed mess hall but I was dreamily disappointed. However, the food was amazing. There were several carving stations with moist ham and tender turkey. My favorite were the complements such as stuffing, green beans, and mashed potatoes. I am pretty sure I committed carbocide after that huge meal. I will talk about non-savory topics before I talk about the brand new restaurant on campus. This week I applied for the Sigma Phi Epsilon's "Balanced Man Scholarship". After completing a written application my final step is to have an interview on Monday so we will see how it goes. My academic heartbeat has been high pretty lately due to a few good test grades and my successful attempt of getting all the classes I wanted for next semester. In a few hours my Oceanography class is doing a lab experiment off at Sunset Cliffs. We are going to measure wave heights and observe erosion. I think I will bring my wetsuit and board for an afternoon session after lab. I also got my free H1N1 vaccine! Aside from the soar arm, I am confident the vaccine will protect me from harm! Yay, now I can talk about the "La Gran Terraza". This is a new culinary addition nestled in the back of the University Center. When first entering, the impressions of an upscale, gourmet restaurant are met. The decor is warmly accented with a Spanish flair. I believe there are few sections to the restaraunt including a bar called O'Tooles. My friends and I decided to sit outside on the terraza which overlooks Mission Bay. I am not going to go into gritty details so I will give a cliff notes version. Due to slow service our meal took 1.5 hours! However we were understanding since it was busy and the restaurant just opened. The food was extremely gratifying and filling. I had a Salmon Club:

My friends enjoyed Steak Frite, a Tuna salad, and a giant Reuben Sandwich. The best part of the meal was the extremely cheap bill! It was also nice that we could play with our Dining Dollars. We all payed with our lavish "blue cards"

Day by day I realize how spoiled I am to be at arguably the nicest university in the country. It is truly a perfect, comfortable academic setting to excel in. I wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving and I will blog you later

Sometimes in the Fall Fall Fall

This has probably been the slowest week I have had in a long time. Monday and Tuesday were extremely viscous due to some emotional setbacks. Thankfully, my stresses reduced after hump day (Wednesday). As I recollect my memory, I'll take us back to Sunday and work from there. I was torn between watching the Chargers vs. Giants game or enjoying the abnormally good surf. Because my roommate is a fervid Giants fan and I am a loyal San Diegan, I figured the football game would shed some good laughs and tears. After the Charger's eccentric victory I was in a good mood and decided to do all my homework that was due this week. I like busting out my homework early so I can spend the rest of my days studying for upcoming tests. Like I said Monday and Tuesday was such a drag. I couldn't really point out what was wrong because it was just a culmination of things. To distract myself, I worked out and ran to boost up my endorphins. I had another fun volleyball practice with my friends that almost turned sour when I had to retrieve the ball on top of the bleachers.

On Tuesday I had a meeting with my preceptorial assistant. We had a nice little chat about the classes I am going to take next semester and just overall see how I was doing. I spent the rest of my night studying for a psychology exam until I was interrupted by our floor's pet, Henry. Henry isn't your traditional pet for he symbolizes one of the many gray hairs of old Maher Hall.

I won't call him by his insect name because that is just plain degrading for poor Henry. After the bug fiasco ended, I ventured to the Camino dorms for a late night study session. I ended up falling asleep there for a few hours until my alarm woke me up for my 8 a.m class. I looked like a zombie for much of the day because of my sleep deprivation. I chugged along the rest of the academic day and took a nice siesta in the afternoon. That night I attended a ChatU as an Ambassador from 7-9 pm. This means I sat in a computer lab with other ambassadors and we chatted to prospective freshman over the internet. It was kind of weird doing this because just a few months ago I was in the curious, anxious position as a high school senior. After the chat I relaxed in my room a bit before the Maher RLC. As usual, the RLC sparked interesting conversations that really got me thinking about life. The discussion stuck with me for the rest of the night and even hindered my ability to sleep! Today is Thursday where I only have one class. Thus, the day is open purely for my ambitions and motives. After writing this, I am going to go study, eat, study, go to the gym, play volleyball, and study. I am looking forward to Friday because it is the first home basketball game against Stanford. I definitely need to practice my "oles". Till next week lads.

Enduring the Cold Front

As spoiled as it might sound, I am currently blogging from my actual bedroom. Yes, I am still a mama's boy who needs weekly laundry to be cleaned by the caring professionalism of his mother. This week has been a bit morose and lethargic for me. I will start it off by saying the weather in San Diego is extremely bipolar. Although I am used to it, I am not fond of it. It has been unusually cold lately, but there are still hourly spurts of heat that interrupt the relationship I am trying to have with my sweaters. In terms of academics, this week has been quite slow. The only thing that is swaying my mood is the results of two tests I got back. On both exams, I made little, careless mistakes that cost me a B- instead of an A-. It just frustrates me how I know the material, but I get caught up in overconfidence and speed. I seriously need to analyze every bit of the problem before quickly picking the supposedly correct answer. I am also not used to having a raw, blatant test score. All throughout high school I was aided by the training wheels of curves, extra credit, and numerous amounts of easy homework assignments. I have come to realize that my artificial academic success (grades) solely depends on treacherous tests! The topic of grades popped up last night at the Maher RLC, and I deeply appreciated Father Mike's comment about how school is unjustly based on grades, rather than pure, simple learning. The Maher RLC is always an important part of my week. It provides time for me to meditate, disccuss, and vent about life's problems and issues. Prior to the RLC, I went to the Mass of Peace with a friend of mine and enjoyed the dim lit setting of community worship. I try to get myself to go to mass at least once a week as a part of my spiritual homeostasis. I don't find myself attracted to the large, traditional ceremonies of Sunday masses, so I am glad to have discovered the layed back Mass of Peace.
Because I didn't have any homework this week, I focused alot of my time on picking classes. I am still iffy on the process, but talking to my Preceptor and PA has really helped. I was also excited to learn that my AP credits enabled me to register alot earlier than if I had zero credits coming in. Hello to having a schedule with no Friday class! One thing that I really enjoyed about this week was playing the sports I was involved in. The 3v3 basketball team I am on won its first game on Monday! I didn't want to mention this but we actually lost because it is best of 3 games. I also had fun playing volleyball with my friends late at night. Our intramural team took a devastating loss last week, so we are practicing really hard in our "bye" week. Well, my laundry is done so I am going to hug my mom and head back to USD!

Namaste!

As my first blog post ever, I would like to say hello to the e-world, but more specifically all those associated with the University of San Diego. My name is William Woesle and I am a freshman here at USD. I would begin a formal introduction but I think you guys will learn about me in my writing quite quickly.
Today is Sunday, the resolution to my climactic weekend. I would have to say everything but the actual night of Halloween was enjoyable. On Friday I enjoyed a nice date with my girlfriend at a sushi bar in Old Town followed by the Dr. Kenneth Miller lecture. I thought it was so cool that I was listening to the guy that wrote my high school Biology book! I no longer continued my resentment to the burdensome text book. After saying my farewells to Ellie, my girlfriend, I rushed to my dorm to get ready for the Halloween dance. After having soar legs and sweat stained shirt, I believed the dance was a great success. After the entertaining cardio, my friends and I were super hungry and drove to In n Out with our costumes. The looks I got were priceless as I wore my "lederhosen" with confidence and pride! Returning back to the dorm around 12, my night simmered down with a nice, non-horror film.

My SaturDAY was fun while my SaturNIGHT was a bit disappointing. I always wanted to show my friends San Diego outside of Linda Vista and Mission Beach. So around noon I grabbed my friends Jared and Katie and began a 3 hour excursion up highway 101. This was a great bonding experience as we enjoyed sandwhiches and frozen yogurt on Del Mar beach. We finally returned back to Maher, my dorm, in the later part of the afternoon. I was hoping to begin Halloween festivities but everyone didn't know what to do! Thus, my friends and I spent a few hours sitting and thinking. Around 9 pm we finally put on our costumes and felt like acting like kids a.k.a trick or treating. Unfortunately for us, the neighborhood we went to was a total blackout. It was too late for trick or treating, so we tried to immerse ourselves in the college crowd at Mission Beach. Like the neighborhood, MB also looked dead! The reason why I wasn't enjoying this situation was because I was aimlessly driving around with no destination. Tired of driving, I headed back to USD with a car full of disappointed nerds and rednecks. The rest of my night was more relaxing as I just hung out with friends in my room. It was exceptionally funny when we forgot about day light savings and instead thought our clocks were being tampered by paranormal activity. I went to bed rather late but promised to be academically productive on this typically sunny Sunday morning.
Until next time...
